Sclerotherapy is the treatment of choice for the elimination of varicose veins and spider veins. In addition to the cosmetic benefits, sclerotherapy can also improve related symptoms like aching, swelling, and cramping.
During this minimally invasive procedure, the physician uses a tiny needle to inject a salt solution (sotradecol-sodium tetradecyl sulfate) directly into the targeted vein. This causes the vein to collapse. The body responds by rerouting blood flow through healthy veins. Within a few weeks, the vein turns into scar tissue and the visible evidence of it fades away.
The procedure can take less than one hour, depending on the number of veins being treated and the size and location of the veins.
Some activities are limited for a few days after the procedure. Post-treatment recommendation is to wear support pantyhose or compression stockings for two weeks.
Sclerotherapy is not an option for everyone. An advance consultation can determine if you are a good candidate for the treatment. The treatment is not an option if you are pregnant, also if you have a history of blood clots, you may not be eligible for the procedure.
